John Wayne is Hondo Lane, U.S. Cavalry disptach rider in 1874 who, in his travels, comes across a young woman and her son living alone in Apache territory.  Hondo leads the woman and other families to safety and in the process falls in love with her.  Hondo is half Indian himself and fighting the Apache has him troubled.
