John Wayne is Tom Dunson, a cattle baron who whilt his ranch with hard work and determination to kill any man who would dare try to take his land.  When plummeting livestock values endanger his ranch, Tom and his adopted son set out to get a fair price for their cattle by driving them through the treacherous Chisholm Trail from Texas to Kansas.  Battling Indians, stampedes and conflict among the ranch hands, Tom proves that he will stop at nothing to reach his destination.
